Golden Horizon sails up

About Tradewind Voyages Cruises

Tradewind Voyages started out in 2020 as a one-ship line. The first vessel, Golden Horizon, is chartered from the Brodosplit shipyard in Croatia (Golden Horizon was originally built for Star Clippers and intended to be called Flying Clipper).

The 272-passenger Golden Horizon is a true sailing ship and the world's largest square-rigged vessel. The line has mapped out a philosophy to use the ocean's currents and wind power, whenever possible, to follow the sun.

The line operates from a head office in Suffolk, U.K., headed up by chief executive Stuart McQuaker, a former Royal Navy commanding officer and Saga Cruises' chief operating officer.

Tradewind Voyages will operate sailings to the British Isles, Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, Australia, and Middle East.

The line's inaugural sailing on Golden Horizon departs July 1, 2021, from Harwich, England, on a six-night U.K. cruise. A six-night Dress Rehearsal sailing departs Portsmouth, England, on June 22, calling at Weymouth, Falmouth, Fowey, Dartmouth and Poole.

Tradewind Voyages Cruise Tips, Activities, and Overview

Who goes on Tradewind Voyages cruise ships?

Because of its romantic appeal, you are likely to find couples and honeymooners, among sailing enthusiasts onboard.

With a base and only office in the U.K., expect mainly British, with some European and American passengers. (Note: the initial ex-U.K. sailings operated on Golden Horizon are only open to U.K. residents.).

The line's minimum age to sail is nine, though there are no kids clubs, areas to play or children's programming onboard.

There are no accessible cabins on Golden Horizon, nor does it have an elevator so passengers should be mobile and not wheelchair dependant.

Do I have to dress up on a Tradewind Voyages cruise?

No. During the day, expect a casual vibe, with weather-appropriate dress, such as shorts, jeans and comfortable shoes/sneakers. After 6 p.m., the dress code is elegant casual, with dresses, skirts or slacks with a sweater or blouse for women and trousers and a collared shirt for men.

Swimwear, cover-ups and sportswear can be worn in the gym, on the sun deck and in the marina.

Is everything free on Tradewind Voyages cruises?

Almost. All meals, WiFi, gratuities, selected beer, wine and soft drinks with lunch and dinner in the main restaurant and watersports, with the exception of diving, are included.

Room service for Deluxe and Suite passengers is also included.

Drinks outside of mealtimes, excursions, and beauty and spa treatments are not included.

What are Tradewind Voyages’s most popular activities?

From climbing the masts to steering the ship from its two traditional external wheels (subject to certain conditions), passengers will spend a lot of time on deck.

The Marina will be popular for watersports, including snorkelling, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, sailing dinghies and windsurfing, and expect a lot of time spent around the ship’s three pools -- including a two-story 18-foot dive pool.

Best for: Cruisers who are looking for an intimate sailing experience on an authentic tall ship.

Not for: Passengers that like late-night parting and a big-ship feel.

Fantastic cruise on Golden Horizon

Met on board by very friendly staff who took us to the reception desk where we were photographed, issued with our cruise cards, then taken to our cabin. The duo (It Takes 2) were outstanding - Graeme the guitarist was one of the highlights of the cruise with his regular guitar solos, and Kelly the singer could sing many different types of popular songs at a very high standard, in particular Paper Roses by Marie Osmond which was requested by myself.Read More

Can’t Wait To Get Off.

There is no other food available on the ship, as the alternative Horizon Grill cannot open in wet weather, and don’t expect the buffet-style offerings that you get on larger cruise ships. No facilities to log credit card details at check in so we are wondering how we will make payment at the end of the Cruise.Read More

An amazing sailing ship cruise

Our original booked marina deck cabin was unavailable, so we were shown to a comfortable Gallery deck cabin, on a level with the dining room.We have cruised several hundred times over 40 years, but this sailing ship cruise on Golden Horizon was exceptional in so many ways.Read More

Wonderful experience

Many years ago whilst holidaying in Rhodes my husband spotted a masted sailing ship and yearned for years to be able to enjoy and adventure on one. Then two years ago we spotted a sailing ship in Kotor, this time we could see the decks and once again felt jealousy for the people enjoying such a special adventure.Read More
